Mercury
The Minamata Convention
Reducing Mercury Emissions and Identifying ‘Allowed Uses’ for Your Mercury with KBNM Metals
The Minamata Convention on Mercury is an international agreement aimed at reducing the emission of mercury. After more than three years of ratification in at least 50 states, the agreement went into force on 16th August 2017.
The Convention highlights the prohibition of new mercury mines, the phase-out of existing mines, and the limitation of mercury use in various products and processes.
However, there are “allowed uses” where mercury is not considered waste but remains a defined product. Mercury is crucial in many technical applications, and we are an approved company for tightly limited research projects.
We will scrutinize the legal framework and conditions to determine if your mercury can be sold for an “allowed use,” and we are your partner for that.
You don’t have to dispose of your mercury as waste, and we will offer our services to audit and document every application we are involved in.
Mercury Stabilization
Looking for a unique and groundbreaking method for mercury stabilization? Look no further than the KBNM’s mercury stabilization process!
Our process sets new milestones for safety, conversion rate, and process efficiency, making it the top choice for your mercury stabilization needs. Using a specially-formulated stabilization reagent that is mixed with pure liquid mercury, our process achieves unparalleled results.
Active sulfur within the mixture reacts with the metallic mercury to form HgS (cinnabar), the only non-toxic mercury compound. HgS is also the most stable and insoluble, making it the ideal choice for mercury stabilization.
Plus, our wet process means that the KBNM process is not prone to gaseous mercury emissions, ensuring top-notch operational safety. Don’t settle for less – choose the KBNM’s processes for your mercury stabilization needs!
Capacity:
3 reactors:
1.200 t of mercury per year
Process performance:
conversion rate of over 99.999 %
HgS quality:
<10 µg/Nm mercury vapor pressure
leachate EN 12457-2: <2 mg/kg Hg
A Complete Solution to Dispose Off Toxic Mercury Waste
Mercury Disposal
We specialize in the disposal of mercury from a variety of sources, including the chlor-alkali industry, natural gas extraction, nonferrous mining and smelting, and others. We ensure that all mercury waste is safely and efficiently disposed of to protect both people and the environment.
Safe Packaging
To further ensure safety, we package all mercury waste in pressurized containers with a capacity of 1000 to 2000 kg each. These containers can be purchased or rented from KBNM to fit your specific needs.
Compliance
We understand the importance of compliance with international regulations for hazardous waste shipment. That's why we handle all necessary notifications and approvals, and place a high emphasis on traceability throughout the entire process.
Transport:
We transport all metallic mercury waste to our facility in accordance with international regulations for dangerous goods, further ensuring safety and compliance every step of the way.
Stabilization
Through the exceptional KBNM process (refer to the previous page), the mercury is stabilized to HgS. HgS satisfies the requirements for long-term disposal in salt mines.
Safe Packaging
The HgS is carefully packed in steel drums for safe transportation and permanent disposal in the salt mine.
Transport
The HgS is moved to KBNM where it is thoroughly examined. Subsequently, it is transported to its final destination in accordance with global regulations for the shipment of hazardous waste and transportation of dangerous goods.
Disposal
The HgS is deposited at KKBNM's salt mine, and the salt mines follow the highest standards of traceability and long-term stability to ensure safe and reliable storage.
End Use and Traceability of Mercury
1. The transportation of mercury from the customer site to KBNM is conducted under a notification process using a “movement document for transboundary shipments of waste.
2. The mercury is transformed into mercury salts through production operations for its end-use.
3. An external laboratory conducts sampling and inspection of the mercury sulfide.
4. The mercury salts are transported from the KBNM salt production plant to a warehouse.
5. The mercury salts are then transported to manufacture end products in accordance with the allowed use under the Minamata Convention.
The products are handled and stored in a safe environment.
We Comply with Minamata Convention's Allowed Use Regulations
We ensure that all uses of mercury align with the “allowed use” regulations stated in the Minamata Convention.
We carefully examine each customer’s application to determine if it falls under the permitted use category before selling any mercury.
This allows us to provide a clear and defined path for the mercury, ensuring compliance with the Minamata Convention from the source to the final product.
Our permitted use category includes laboratory scale research, mercury added products in article file, switches and relays, CCFL and EEFL for electronic displays, measuring devices, traditional or religious practices, and vaccines containing thimerosal as preservatives.
However, we do not support the use of mercury in cosmetics, pesticides, biocides, antiseptics, barometers, hygrometers, manometers, thermometers, sphygmomanometers, dental amalgam, chlor-alkali production, ayurveda medicines or any other non-allowed use.
